White City’s new school, Emerald Ridge, will open in September 2014.
The school will have space for 475 K-8 students as well as providing 50 child care spaces.
The school, first approved by former Education Minister Donna Harpauer, will receive an $18 million contribution from the provincial government for the construction.
White City Mayor Bruce Evans stated, “Our community has been growing at a record setting pace, and our existing school could not keep up with the demands of a growing school age popluation. It took some time to convince the school division, and from there the Ministry of Education, that a second elementary school in our community was not only warranted, but critical. Decades of decline in rural school population had engrained a deep level of scepticism that such a thing as a new school in rural Saskatchewan was justified.”
Evans went on to say, “Our MLA, Christine Tell, since 2007, has been the driving force in the effort to lobby the provincial government for the new school. We appreciate her commitment and efforts to help secure our new Emerald Ridge Elementary School.”
