SASKATCHEWAN LEADS NATION IN GROWTH OF REGISTERED NURSES

Saskatchewan leads the country in the growth of its registered nurse workforce, according to a report released yesterday by the Canadian Institute of Health Information.

Regulated Nurses: Canadian Trends, 2006 to 2010 outlines positive news for the province. During this timeframe:

·             The registered nurse workforce in Saskatchewan increased by 12.5 per cent - the highest of any other province in Canada.

·             Saskatchewan is one of the few provinces where the average age of RNs decreased.

·             In 2010, more than 60 per cent of RNs worked in full-time positions - the highest percentage in western Canada.

·             In Saskatchewan the number of nurse practitioners increased from 88 in 2006 to 122 in 2010, an increase of 38.6 per cent.

"This national report recognizes the solid progress we've made in Saskatchewan," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "This past fall, we celebrated the addition of more than 900 new nurses working in the province than in 2007-08 - far exceeding our commitment to hire 800 more registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses."

The majority of these nurses have been hired as part of the work under the partnership agreement between the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) and the provincial government, signed in February 2008. Additional positions have been created by health regions.

McMorris Wins Double Gold

Mark McMorris won two snowboarding gold medals at the Winter X-Games held last weekend in Aspen, Colorado.

The Regina Wascana Plains resident is now ranked 6th in the world and will be competing at the world snowboarding championships to be held in Oslo, Norway, February 10-19.

Mark is the son of Don and Cindy McMorris.

Rory & Lorie Allen Citizens of Year

Two residents of Regina Wascana Plains have been crowned Regina’s 2011 CTV Citizens of the Year.

“It’s humbling to think singing for someone can mean so much to them, but nobody ever thinks they’re worthy of an award like this,” says Rory Allen.

Allen and his wife Lorie might be known as entertainers, but it’s their dedication to charity work which caught the eye of judges.

For years the Allens have tirelessly donated their time to play fundraising gigs for organizations like the Regina Food Bank and Humane Society; Rory estimates 70 per cent of performances last year were for charities.

Allen names the annual Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region Palliative Care Services Program as one of the most rewarding concerts of the year.

“The people you sing to literally might not be there tomorrow, or even that evening,” he says.

“We get invites into rooms, we sing, we sit and we pray. It makes everything else pale in comparison.”

“Lorie is always thinking of other people, she is always selfless,” he says.

“If we’ve helped to brighten someone’s life, then that’s a wonderful thing. We’re blessed to be a part of this community
